Train Fuelled By Beef
Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation of the US operates passenger services on 34,000 km of track and is primarily owned by freight railroads connecting 500 destinations in 46 states of America and three Canadian provinces. It transports over 30 million passengers annually and has begun running its first U.S. biodiesel commuter train. The Heartland Flyer, whose biofuel is derived from beef byproducts, will connect travelers between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth during a one year trial run.
The green train’s usage of B20 biofuel reduces hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions by 10 percent, particulates by 15 percent, and sulphates by 20 percent compared to regular diesel. During the 12-month experiment, Amtrak will collect and analyse data on actual emissions and the effects of B20 on the train’s mechanical systems.
Passengers will be offered a 50 percent discount on a companion fare until the end of next month as an incentive to hop on the green train.
