BMW New Zealand introduced an innovative idea to put the driving skills of some of the golfers participating in the BMW NZ Open to the test in Christchurch, and there wasn’t a golf club in sight.
A select group of players, consisting of David Smail, Marcus Wheelhouse and Peter O’Malley, swapped their usual tools of the trade and the fairways of Clearwater for a brand new BMW and the tarmac of Ruapuna Race Track.
After sampling a selection of new BMW models during a drive from Clearwater Golf Course to Ruapuna Race Track, the three golfers were provided with expert tuition from BMW Driving Experience head instructor, Mike Eady.
They then had some familiarisation laps before embarking on a timed run in a BMW 335d sedan, and quickly found a fast lap doesn’t rely on pure horsepower.
“There are many synergies between golf and motorsport as there are a variety of elements which must come together to produce both the perfect round and the perfect lap,” said 2001 NZ Open winner, David Smail.
The results of the flying lap made for interesting reading, with David Smail outdriving his competition and winning by two seconds over Marcus Wheelhouse with a further four seconds back to Peter O’Malley.
